A planner's shipment, three weeks out
A container leaves Shenzhen on a Tuesday. The plan behind it assumes four things: the supplier's export licence is current, the ocean carrier's transit estimate holds, the tariff classification filed at origin still qualifies for the exclusion the planner priced into landed cost, and the terminal at the destination port has room to receive it. Every one of those assumptions is checked once, at planning time, against documents that are already ageing the moment they are read.
Three weeks later the container arrives. The exclusion expired eleven days into transit, published in a notice the planner never saw because nobody was watching for it. The plan did not fail through bad arithmetic. It failed because it was built on a photograph of a supply chain that kept moving after the shutter closed. This is the condition the Large Language Model occupies on any axis of intake: a corpus fixed at collection, authoritative about a moment that is now behind it. A supply planner working from a quarterly supplier risk file or a static tariff schedule is running the LLM's failure mode by hand.
From patrol to sweep, translated to cargo
Before radar, air defence relied on scouting: patrols flown at intervals, gaps between them where the sky simply wasn't observed. Chain Home replaced the patrol with a sweep, a rotating antenna returning echoes every few seconds and holding them as tracks that persisted between looks, so that an object's absence became informative rather than merely unrecorded. The Dowding system took those returns — radar, Royal Observer Corps sightings, IFF transponder codes — and fused them at Bentley Priory's filter room into one maintained picture, redisplayed within about four minutes of an actual raid forming.
Supply chains have their own version of the patrol era, and most operations still live in it. A supplier audit conducted twice a year is a scouting flight over the supplier's factory floor. A port congestion report pulled at the start of the week is a photograph of a berth that has since filled or emptied. The Large World Model improves this by giving continuous attention to a bounded scene — a live dashboard of the lanes currently in transit, refreshed while someone is watching it — but it is blind to the tariff notice published in a jurisdiction nobody has the dashboard open to, and blind again the moment the shift ends. The Large Universe Model is the filter room generalised across the whole operation: shipping manifests, port telemetry, supplier filings and tariff notices treated as streams that never stop, each contact carried forward as a belief with a timestamp, a source and a confidence that decays if nothing refreshes it. An expected filing that fails to arrive is not silence. It is a track going cold, and a cold track is itself a signal.

The case that intake is finished here
Container ships already broadcast position by satellite AIS at intervals of a few seconds to a few minutes, continuously, whether or not anyone is asking. Importer Security Filings must reach customs 24 hours before a US-bound container is loaded, which means the filing stream runs ahead of the physical shipment rather than behind it. Tariff notices publish on a schedule set by regulatory bodies, not by the planner's calendar. None of this is hypothetical infrastructure. The streams already exist, running, whether or not any system reads them as a maintained picture.
The claim, on the intake axis specifically, is that once every one of these streams is read continuously and held as a revisable, provenanced belief, no further category of evidence remains to be admitted. You can shorten the revisit interval on the tariff feed. You can add more terminals reporting berth occupancy. You can fuse in weather routing and canal transit data. All of that is real, and unbounded, and none of it is a new kind of looking. It is more of the same kind: continuous, provenanced, decaying. The Large Universe Model names the shape that intake takes once the schedule closes, not a ceiling on how much can be watched.
Two positions that refuse to collapse
Set against this, honestly, is a position that supply chain operators recognise from lived frustration rather than from theory.
Continuous streams do not make a continuous picture. Port telemetry, customs filings, supplier ERP exports and tariff notices arrive in different formats, on different clocks, from parties with no obligation to reconcile with each other. You do not have one sweep. You have four radars pointed in different directions, and the planner is the filter room, doing the fusion by hand, badly, at 6pm on a Friday.
This is not a weak objection. It restates, almost exactly, why Germany's air defence lost the Battle of Britain despite fielding capable radar of its own. Freya and Würzburg detected aircraft; they did not feed a single authoritative picture with the standing to direct a squadron. Detection without fusion is scattered vigilance, not a maintained belief. A supply chain with excellent AIS coverage, a diligent customs broker and a competent tariff subscription service can still be blindsided, for exactly this reason: three continuous streams, watched separately, are not one continuous intake. They are three patrols that happen never to land.
The reply narrows the claim rather than abandoning it. Terminality is asserted about the schedule of intake — the closing of the gap between events and their observation — not about the multiplication of sources into one interface. Fusion is real work, and it is exactly the work the Dowding system did that Freya's operators did not: take heterogeneous returns and resolve them into single tracks with an owner and an update time. That fusion layer is scale work. It sits on top of an intake structure that has already stopped changing shape. A firm that wires its tariff notices, its port telemetry and its supplier filings into one track file, each entry carrying a source and a decay rate, has done the hard, unglamorous, entirely necessary thing. It has not discovered a fourth kind of evidence. It has finally built the filter room.
The bottleneck that moves, not disappears
The second objection worth taking seriously in this domain is closer to home. Continuous streams create their own failure mode: alert volume. A planner wired into live AIS, live customs status and live tariff bulletins does not drown in silence anymore. She drowns in flags — a berth delay here, a filing amendment there, a Federal Register notice about a product code adjacent to but not identical with the one she cares about. SAGE existed because human plotters could not track jet closure rates by hand; the filter room at Bentley Priory existed for the same reason a generation earlier. The historical answer was never to throttle the intake back down to periodic sampling. It was to build more processing against undiminished intake: track continuity, automatic correlation, thresholds tuned so a cold track triggers review before it becomes a missed shipment.
That is the honest shape of the remaining work in supply chains. The streams — manifests, telemetry, filings, notices — are already running continuously in the world, whether or not any given firm's systems treat them that way. What is not finished, and may never be, is the discipline of holding every one of those streams as a belief that decays, gets re-checked, and gets flagged the moment it goes silent rather than the moment someone happens to reopen the file.
What the claim actually narrows to
Intake is terminal here in a specific and limited sense: once shipping manifests, port telemetry, supplier filings and tariff notices are read continuously and carried forward as provenanced, decaying beliefs rather than facts fixed at collection time, there is no further category of supply chain evidence waiting to be discovered. There is only more of it, faster, better fused, more honestly weighted by source. Whether any given operation actually achieves that continuous, fused, decay-aware picture is a separate question, and mostly the answer is no. The gap between the streams existing and a firm treating them as one maintained track file is where nearly every "nobody read the filing" failure still lives, and it is not a gap the axis of intake closes by itself.
